How Often to Have Sex to Stay healthy & Age Gracefully?

Posted on: July 8th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 3 Comments

How often is it healthy to have sex? Is it beneficial to have more or less often? What is sex? The act of sex connects two beings physically, emotionally, and spiritually. However, if sex is reduced to just a physical act between two beings, its subtle underlying benefits diminish significantly. Human beings like physical touch, emotional engagement, and even spiritual connection. Sex is the only act during which two human experience oneness of all physical, emotional, and spiritual beings. Each being for those brief moments cease to exist by itself. During these moments, is it a human being having a spiritual experience or a spiritual being having a human. You decide. But either way sex plays an important role in our health and aging gracefully. Health and wellness is promoted from the most subtle spiritual levels to gross physical levels of our being.

What Constitutes Sex?

Young Man Kissing His Lovers Neck

Sex between a loving couple is an intimate expression of love. Sex is often mostly associated to having “hot and steamy” intercourse. This is due to our culture creating such an image about sex. While at times a couple will have such enjoyable moments but the sex is not just restricted to that. In fact, if you live with such expectations, you could be in for a big disappointment. Especially as you age, the sex drive you had at the age of 30 will not be the same at the age of 60. However, the inherent drive for being intimate to give, and to receive love and affection is just the same. It is up to two people to decide how they would like to express their love and sex can take many forms. So continuously redefining your sexual intimacy can not only bring you pleasure but it is also good for your health and aging gracefully.

How Often to Have Sex?

This of course is a very personal preference. However, ancient medical system- Ayurveda offers some general guidance here. For a healthy person, it is based on how much sexual tissue a person can afford to lose in a particular time of the year (or season). Our body’s nature inside behaves according to the natural cycle outside. (however, our mind- that’s a different story) So follow the guidance below:

  • In the fall/winter, body is in the fast “build & store” mode to deal with winter. If you lose sexual tissue, it is replenished quickly. So in the fall/winter you can enjoy sex once per day.
  • In the spring, body is slowly relinquishing fat stored during winter to become light for summer. If you lose sexual tissue, it is replenished slowly. So in the spring you can enjoy sex twice per week.
  • In the summer, body naturally wants to eat and stay light. If you lose sexual tissue, it takes a lot longer to replenish the tissue. So in the summer you can enjoy sex twice per month.

Note: Diet should be modified to match the seasonal requirements. Also age and other personal health conditions should be considered in forming your sexual habits. Going against the natural cycle means depleting your sexual tissues. The consequences of living with depleted sexual tissues is decreased immunity, infertility, and decreased energy. This in turn will make you susceptible to diseases, loss of health, and speedup aging.

When we follow the rules of how often to have sex, sex is not only a pleasurable activity that supports aging gracefully but also promotes health and wellness from the most subtle spiritual levels to gross physical levels of our being.

Health Tip: Use Amrit  herbal formula to rejuvenate and build all tissues, including reproductive. Both men and women can take this as directed.

How a Movie Example can Teach Us About Spiritual Healing?

Posted on: June 27th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 12 Comments

I want to share a short real life example that I hope will change the way you look at yourself and your role in this life forever. The wisdom in this example challenges your subtle intellect and awakens your spirituality to question your real-self and role in this life. As soon as you begin to practice this awareness, spiritual healing starts to replace your sufferings with peace, health, and wellness.

Do You Ever Question This After Watching a Movie?
A friend comes back after watching a movie. He can not stop talking about how good the movie was. The story touched him in many levels. Sometimes he laughed and another he even cried. I asked him why he liked so much. He liked it because the actors played their parts so real and the story unfolded beautifully not knowing what will happen next. These are main hallmarks of any good movie. He enjoyed the movie even though he cried through the tragic, depressing, and sad parts of the story. But if similar tragic events happened in my friend’s life, he wouldn’t enjoy the experience of suffering as he did while watching the movie. Why is that?

This is a question that warrants a closer observation. Is it because we enjoy watching tragedy in other people’s lives? I hope not. Or is it because, we engage with the movie as a witness knowing very well that all characters in the storyline are just actors. Each actor also knows it is a temporary role and not their real self so they also enjoy and do their best to play their role. In fact their real self is observing to make sure that their character comes across real whether it is rich, poor, good, funny, or tragic role. And after the movie is over, everyone goes on their new and separate ways.

Doesn’t That Sound Familiar?
Now think subtly. Isn’t this what happens in our life? We try to perform our role on this “stage” of life to the best of our ability in good, sad, or bad times. While performing, if we strictly identify with the physical self playing the character role permanently, we suffer. On the other hand while performing if we identify with our higher spiritual self (individual consciousness), we realize the character role we are playing is temporary, and our higher spiritual self is overseeing as a witness. Remember, my friend really enjoyed the movie as a witness. So it is with our life. Identify with your higher self, become and live as a witness, and enjoy while performing your physical role with full vigor and conviction. With such awareness, you enjoy playing any role just as the actors enjoy playing their roles in the movie.

Now Put This to Work for You
Can you cultivate this subtle shift in your awareness about your self? It will not be easy, especially the way we are programmed to live. You need to give your self time to reflect. Be among people with such attitudes. Read inspiring, motivating, and thought provoking writings, books, or poems. Recently I came across a wonderful collection of inspiring and spiritually healing poems and other work by an artist, Milo Adorno. Do whatever it is you need to do to cultivate this spiritual awareness.

I am not saying you have to enjoy your sufferings. I am saying that living with such spiritual awareness you can enjoy the experience of healing while suffering. One common theme that was found in most 70 and older healthy people aging gracefully was their ability to accept and then let go of the tragic events in their lives.

You see spiritual awareness causes subtle mental shift that creates powerful healing effect that permeates health and wellness through out your mind and body. In fact the impact of spiritual healing on our mind body health is far greater than the foods, herbs, or any other supplements.

Techniques for Aging Gracefully and Looking Younger

Posted on: June 12th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 7 Comments

First I would like to remove a myth about aging. So far there is NO natural or manufactured products in the market that can reverse aging. Some hormone supplements seem to work in slowing down the aging but we are unsure of their side effects in the long run. So the best bet is to accept the notion of aging and age gracefully as oppose to fighting it.

Aging Gracefully and Looking YoungerSenior Couple on Computer
To age gracefully, we must keep in mind that aging has physical, mental, intellectual, and spiritual components. All these components are inter-twined and together they make us a “whole” person. As part of aging gracefully, what we loose in physical is made up by gaining experience, wisdom, and peace in mental, intellectual, and spiritual. To focus only on the physical and try to stop or reverse the aging would be going against nature.

Earth, stars, universe, everything around us is aging. It is a law of nature. So you as a part of this nature, if try to go against this natural law, you would only create aggravation and unstable mind. Try to understand this concept from your mature spiritual side; a humble acceptance will replace the aggravation in unstable mind. If you don’t, agitated and stressful mind would only speed up the aging process.

Once we embrace the aging as natural part of us with healthy mental attitude, we can focus on the physical. The basic idea is to slow down the rate of physical decline as we approach the later years of our life. However, preparation to achieve this begins in 30’s and 40’s by eating right foods and having right life style with exercises (or activities).

Physical:
Imagine our body as a building where each cell is a “brick” in this building. And if the walls of a building have bricks missing here and there, the strength, integrity, and shape of the building is compromised. Our goal is to continue building healthy new cells to replace the old dying cell for as long as possible. If the old cells are not replaced with new cells, skin becomes wrinkled and body looses its strength and shape.

Techniques for Aging Gracefully and Looking Younger
• Form a diet plan with foods based on your mind-body constitution that can help you usher in growth of new cells while creating least amount of toxins in the body. This diet is anti-inflammatory and can be further supported by use of turmeric and ginger to reduce internal inflammation and cleanse (detoxify) the body.
• Include the right vitamins and herbal supplements- NOT to supplement good foods but only to cover the gaps.
Detoxify your body regularly- a weekly fast, a monthly fast, or a quarterly cleanse based on your life style.
• As we age, natural tendency of the body is to loose its muscle mass and to replace it with fat mass. Our goal is to slow down the rate of muscle mass conversion to fat mass and retain as much muscle mass for as long as possible.
• No matter what age, we must stay active. Follow a routine of age appropriate exercises and activities that can help retain the muscle mass, reduce fat buildup, and keeps us flexible.

Mental:
Besides foods, we need to be aware of the stressful thoughts and emotions we take in from outside or cultivate within. We must figure a way to “metabolize” stress out of our system to remove “mental inflammation.” This can be a cause for many nerves related and other diseases.

Techniques for Aging Gracefully and Looking Younger
• Utilize our life experiences and spiritual knowledge to shift our mental attitudes to neutralize emotions or thoughts that are source of stress.
• Do breathing exercises in yoga and meditation can also help release the stress and eliminate mental inflammation.
• Keep the mind occupied by continuously learning new interesting and challenging things.
• Get good rest at night by sleeping at least 7 hours

Spiritual:
Spiritual component supports the both mental and physical. Studies have shown people with strong spiritual connections heal faster and have better immunity. I regard spiritual awareness as the cement holding the bricks together in the building. While the physical and mental components change with age, it is the spiritual component that remains unchanged and is a pillar of support in our aging gracefully.

Techniques for Aging Gracefully and Looking Younger
• Let your conscious be your guide
• Live in harmony with nature within and without (personal and social conduct according to laws of Nature)
• Find out your “gift” and make it a calling to share with the world

As you can tell, all physical, mental, and spiritual are inter-twined, support each other, and make us “whole.” We must identify with each component & address each for our “total” health and wellness in life’s journey while aging gracefully naturally without any risky aging products.  Be Well!

Posted on: May 7th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 1 Comment

Causes

Before implementing anxiety natural remedies, you need to understand the causes of anxiety and remove them from your mind (mental) and body (physical).  Mind-body wellness is intricately interwoven.  One affects the wellness of the other.  Physiology supports psychology and vice-versa.

Mental Causes: Thoughts and emotions are food for your mind. Be careful what you are carrying, you continue to take in, and dwell on.  You must have someone trustworthy friend or psychologist to speak with to metabolize your “stuck” thoughts and emotions out of your mind.  Read more in Mental Gingivitis article.

Physical Causes: Foods and drinks we take in can contribute to your anxiety.  According many studies conducted in the last three decades: anxiety remedies

1.  Alcohol and substance abuse can mask the anxiety symptoms or make them worse in some individuals

2.  Caffeine, well known for causing anxious behavior in people, has anxiogenic effects that can amplify anxiety in some anxiety disorder patients offsetting any alertness benefits of caffeine

3.  According to Ayurveda natural medicine, cold, raw, dry, processed, and pungent foods can increase anxiety in the individuals suffering from anxiety disorders. Yes, RAW foods, for some people they can create havoc.

Both physical and mental “foods” we take in affect the anxiety. Though the root cause of the anxiety lies in the mind, the physiology, eating right foods,  must support the mind and should not aggravate or contribute to anxiety. First, you must remove the causes for any treatment to work and if you don’t anxiety will increase to panic and fear. If you are looking to use natural remedies for anxiety, then be prepared to treat both the physiology (body) and psychology (mind). Please proceed to next article for anxiety natural remedies.

Herbs and Foods for Lower Cholesterol

Posted on: February 19th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 1 Comment

Previous article “how do you lower cholesterol naturally” covered what is cholesterol, types of cholesterol, and natural way to maintain the level. Diet is one of the ways, and in order for you to lower your cholesterol level, you must make changes to your diet and to your lifestyle. This article will expand on what are the right foods for lower cholesterol.  Risks are too great for developing serious health problems like heart disease so as soon as you find out you have a problem with your cholesterol, take the following steps to lower and manage it immediately.  And for more expansive researched information, please sign up to our newsletter and receive free Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally e-book.

The First Step:

Cut down but do not totally eliminate the amount of cholesterol in your diet.  You should also lower the total fat intake, especially on saturated and trans fats, in your diet.  Saturated fats are the bigger culprit in raising your cholesterol and these are found in foods like butter, ice cream, eggs, fatty meats, other full-fat dairy products and some oils.

The Second Step:

Eliminate foods with trans fats completely from your diet.  The trans fats are especially bad for your cholesterol levels.  Trans fats will raise your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad” cholesterol, and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the “good” cholesterol. Trans fats are mostly found in margarines, cookies, crackers and cakes.

The Third Step:

Incorporate foods for lower cholesterol into your diet. Not all foods raise your cholesterol. Believe it or not there are actually some fatty & oily foods for lowering your cholesterol level.  For example, foods like fatty fish, walnuts, oatmeal and oat bran can help to control your cholesterol level.  Some studies have shown that a diet which contains these types of foods works as well as some cholesterol-lowering medications to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

The Fourth Step:

Change your lifestyle to include exercise routine, if do not have one already.  Regular exercise or at least being physically active for 30 minutes on most days is a simple way you can change your lifestyle to facilitate to lower your LDL cholesterol and raise your HDL cholesterol.  In addition, getting enough physical activity can help you to loose weight.   Excess weight has the tendency to increase your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol level.  So, if you are overweight and have a high LDL-cholesterol level, losing weight can help you to lower cholesterol.  Weight loss also helps to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels.  And not to mention, being overweight increases your chances for other health problems like diabetes.  Poorly controlled diabetes can increases your cholesterol levels as well.

The fifth Step:

Stress is a “brain trash”.  Empty it often! Cleanse your mind. Surprisingly, controlling your stress is a way to take control of your cholesterol level.  Stress over the long time period has been shown in several studies to raise blood cholesterol levels.  Perhaps under stress people make wrong fatty food choices.  Use yoga and meditation techniques to release stress and manage your cholesterol level.

Changing lifestyle and choosing foods for lower cholesterol can help you avoid taking cholesterol-lowering medications which has several benefits.  One benefit is that it is financially cheaper to eat healthier foods then it is to pay for the medications.  Another you do not have to deal with any side effects from these types of medications (See FDA Warnings on Statins).  As always natural health tips offer preventive care and promote health and wellness naturally.  For more information, sign up and get your free copy of Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally e-book with amazing collection of researched information- all in place. It will save you oodles of time.

Herbal Support:

Cholesterol Protection is an excellent herbal formula to support your efforts in managing cholesterol levels naturally. It is a well balanced formula with Guggulu herb known for its lowering cholesterol properties.

Ten Simple Ayurveda Tips for Life Long Health

Posted on: February 10th, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 8 Comments

“Do We Care Better for Our Cars Than our Bodies?” Strangely enough I really think so.   We are concerned more about being stranded on the freeway somewhere than stranding our selves in the hospital with heart attack someday.  We do not fill the car with wrong type of gasoline but yet we will fill our own body with wrong types of food.  We give our car a break while it is in the garage for regular tune ups.  But we do not take a break even while eating meals.  And then we wonder in a few years, in spite of eating healthy, how we could land a disease.  Today I want to share ten simple Ayurveda Tips to change the lifestyle for better health and avoid chronic illnesses.

You are doing our best to live right to keep your body healthy and avoid illnesses.  My goal is to augment your effort by making some suggestions, perhaps add missing links.  Following are ten simple Ayurveda tips based on ancient wisdom of  natural wellness:ayurveda

  1. Drink a glass of warm to hot water (not coffee), first thing when you wake up.
  2. Get to know your Body Constitution.  Each person is uniquely built with physio-psychological constitution.  Based on your constitution, certain foods and activities are more suitable for you than others.  To assess your body type, please subscribe below to the FREE “simple secrets to good health” mini course and discover your unique body constitution.
  3. Select foods according to your Body Constitution.   Food is the first medicine for the body.  Clean eating with right foods help prevent your body from becoming sick in the first place.  From an Ayurvedic consultation, receive a personalized Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle chart with list of recommended herbs, spices, and foods as per your body constitution .
  4. Make eating a ritual. Take the time to make it light and relaxed time while offering food with love to your body.  Do mindful eating.  Connect with your body and mind while enjoying every bite full of tasty flavors and nutrition.  Disconnect from work, internet, TV, and other interruptions.  Studies have shown when we are distracted with these activities while eating, you gain weight by unknowingly eating more food and/or you absorb less nutrition from your food, even if the food is full of nutrition.  Allow your mind to relax and enjoy!
  5. After a meal for optimum digestion, your stomach should be half full with “solids”, one quarter full with liquid, and one quarter empty with “air”.
  6. Allow 4-5 hours in between meals. When possible eat at least one meal per day with a family or a group of friends.
  7. Drink very little water with the meals.  Wait about 45 minutes and drink good amount of water.  NEVER drink ICED water/drinks just before, during, and right after the meals.  Iced water compromises your digestive fire leading to slow or inefficient digestion.
  8. Do at least once per week Oileation (Ayurvedic Massage)of your body as per your Body Constitution.  Ayurvedic Massage is a loving application of oil all over your body with light massaging motions.  Leave the oil to soak in for 25 minutes before taking a shower.  This nourishes your body while slows down aging. Ayurvedic massage oil is available here.
  9. Exercising 2-3 times a week.  This is nothing new; however, I want to include this for some of us who needs extra motivation and reminders.  In my gym, I regularly meet some people who can barely walk but they are there doing their thing.  I call them just pure inspiration for the rest of us.    Aerobics, sports, walking, yoga, weights, and other resistance exercises are all good.  Choose your exercises as per your body condition and your goals.
  10. Form a daily and weekly routine! The MOST important part is- STICK to it

Imagine Implementing the Small Ayurveda Tips & Receiving Big Health Benefits

Imagine your life if you took care of your body, “your vehicle for your lifetime journey”, with these simple ayurveda tips.   You would live with vibrant health; creating meaningful healthy relationships; bursting with energy while undertaking your responsibilities; enjoying life to its full potential; and creating health in others by spreading happiness to every one who surrounds you.  You would prevent chronic illnesses like obesity, diabetes, anxiety disorders, depression, and fatal illness like cancer. Economically, you would save loads of money by NOT needing pharmaceutical drugs.  And let’s not forget, you would avoid the dangerous side effects that come from using synthetic drugs.  Natural Ayurveda tips offer true preventive care and promote health and wellness naturally.

How to Detoxify Body Naturally in 7 Days?

Posted on: January 2nd, 2011 by Rakesh Sethi 11 Comments

Vacation and holidays are fun!  But we all know when we have over eaten, over drunk, over enjoyed, over done and all at the expense of our body.  Our body goes out of balance (health) and if we continue such a life style, we feel lethargic, dull, lack of energy, low appetite, gas, bloating, constipation, and we gain weight. Just like we do oil change & tune up for our car, now is good time to do “oil change”, that is to detoxify body naturally.

Your body, overtime, has accumulated toxins and body systems functions are compromised and if you do not detoxify whole body now, you may land yourself some illness.  If you have come to this point, taking a short cut with vitamins or energy drinks is not the answer. In fact your “digestive fire” is already compromised & you may be harming your body by putting unnecessary doses of vitamins plus throwing your hard earned money down the drain. So  at this time go with the total body cleanse and also as a general maintenance to do a whole body cleanse is good for you.

Let me show you exactly how you can detoxify body naturally in 6 to 7 days gently following simple steps:

detoxify-body-naturally1.  Start first day with ONLY 32 oz. – 48 oz. of warm to hot water in the morning. Have warm light vegetable soup for lunch.  Or if you can manage with fruits only choose cooked apple or pear or uncooked grapefruit or pomegranate. In the afternoon have only fresh Ginger tea.  Evening meal if you can skip great, if not, have only Moong lentil soup.  Rest & avoid exercising on this day.

2.  For the next 5-6 days:

    • Have warm light easy to digest foods like chicken broth soups, rice & Moong lentil soups, or other light meals
    • Drink hot fresh cut ginger tea 3 cups and only hot water through out the day
  • Take 1000mg Turmeric (2x500mg capsules) after each meal w/ warm water
  • Take 2000mg Triphala (2x1000mg tablets) Not after dinner but 1 hour before bedtime w/ warm water

3.  AVOID the following during these days:

Icy cold drinks, Fried foods, Red Meats, Cheese, Heavy creamy & sugary foods, Raw vegetables, Cold foods

Follow the above steps and you will detoxify body naturally of accumulated toxins in a matter of days.  No shock & aw or synthetic chemicals- all natural gentle process.  If you do not see enough improvement in 7 days, extend it for 3 more days.  A good measure is – Your energy level & robust appetite will return.

For more gradual and gentle detoxification, use herbal formula Eliminate Toxins.

Caution: Do NOT detoxify body, if pregnant.  Also if you have any medical condition, check with your physician before starting any procedure.

Note: If you like, you can practice “mini” version of the detox by following the above steps EXCEPT rather than five to six days in step two, do this step for only for two days. Use this mini version to detoxify body naturally more frequently (every or every other month) for it to be effective. Consult with your Ayurveda practitioner how often to detoxify the body.

If you liked this article then biggest compliment you can give is by sharing this wellness with others.  As always keep in mind natural health tips along with right eating offer preventive care and promote health and wellness naturally.  Be Well!
